BSc Hons, BVetMed, CertAVP(GSAS), AdvCert SAOS, MRCVS
Advanced Practitioner in Small Animal Surgery East Kent Veterinary Referrals, Sandwich, Kent.
Andy Banerjee is an RCVS Advanced Practitioner in Small Animal Surgery and the clinical lead for advanced surgical services at East Kent Veterinary Referrals. He is the first Advanced Practitioner-led surgeon to offer an independent referral service in East Kent, bringing advanced surgical and orthopaedic care to the local veterinary community without the need for clients to travel to distant referral centres.
Andy graduated from the Royal Veterinary College, London in 2013 with a combined BSc (Hons) in Veterinary Science and a Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine. From there, he built his early career across small animal hospitals in London, Hertfordshire, Kent, and Norfolk, developing a strong foundation in both soft tissue surgery and orthopaedics alongside a particular interest in diagnostic imaging.
In 2022, Andy completed a Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice with a surgical focus (CertAVP GSAS), and in 2023 was awarded RCVS Advanced Practitioner status in Small Animal Surgery. This designation reflects a sustained commitment to postgraduate development, peer-reviewed clinical assessment, and a demonstrably high standard of practice.
For the three years prior to joining EKVR, Andy worked at a specialist-led orthopaedic referral hospital in Norfolk, training directly under internationally recognised orthopaedic surgeons. This immersive environment gave him extensive hands-on experience across the full spectrum of complex musculoskeletal cases, from cruciate disease and patellar luxation to angular limb deformities, elbow dysplasia, spinal conditions, and beyond. In 2025, he was awarded an Advanced Certificate in Small Animal Orthopaedic Surgery (AdvCert SAOS). Alongside his surgical development, Andy has also undertaken further study in diagnostic imaging, anaesthesia, pathology, and neurology and neurosurgery.
Andy's caseload encompasses a broad range of orthopaedic and advanced soft tissue procedures. Orthopaedic work includes cruciate ligament surgery (TPLO, CCWO, lateral suture), patellar surgery (TTT, sulcoplasty, DFO), hip surgery (toggle stabilisation, FHNE), fracture management, arthroscopy and CT-guided management of elbow dysplasia, correction of angular limb deformities using 3D custom guides, arthrocentesis and intra-articular injections, and assessment and management of lumbo-sacral disease and IVDD. Soft tissue work includes keyhole surgery, complex tumour removals including skin flaps and grafts, abdominal surgery, bladder surgery, airway surgery for BOAS, ear surgery (TECA and VBO), and oncological surgery with metastasis screening and staging. CT imaging is available on-site for surgical planning and diagnostic workup.
These lists are not exhaustive. Andy welcomes informal clinical discussions about case suitability before a formal referral is submitted.
Andy's approach to referral is built around professional partnership. He understands that referring a case means trusting someone else with your client relationship, and he takes that responsibility seriously. Referring vets receive detailed updates throughout a case, full operative notes, and clear postoperative and rehabilitation plans. Clinical advice is available informally before any commitment to a formal referral, and Andy is always happy to discuss a case, talk through options, or advise on whether referral is the right step.
Patients are returned to first-opinion care as soon as it is clinically appropriate, and no referral client will be taken on for first-opinion services at Beacon View. The relationship between EKVR and the referring practice is one of collaboration.
In addition to his clinical work, Andy is actively involved in research within small animal veterinary orthopaedics, contributing to several ongoing projects in the field. This engagement with the wider research community informs his surgical practice and reflects a commitment to evidence-based care.
We recognise that referring vets value responsiveness and professional partnership. At EKVR, you can request formal referrals or clinical advice on challenging cases prior to referral submission. Our systems are structured to facilitate efficient case transfer and comprehensive communication, ensuring clarity and shared decision-making at every stage.
