Endoscopy

Diagnostic Endoscopy

Diagnostic endoscopy is a powerful tool used by vets to examine internal organs and spaces with minimal invasiveness. It's a key part of many medical investigations. There are two main types of endoscopes:

Flexible endoscopes: Imagine long, thin cameras made of fibre optics. These bendable instruments are ideal for navigating intricate pathways such as the oesophagus and stomach.

Rigid endoscopes: These are sturdy, straight tubes made of stainless steel and contain glass rods or fibre optics to transmit light and images. They're used for examining non-tubular spaces like the nose, ears, and larynx.

Endoscopy: When is it Used?

Endoscopy can be a valuable tool to investigate a variety of concerning symptoms. Here are some common reasons a vet might recommend an endoscopy:

Trouble Swallowing (Dysphagia): This could indicate a blockage, inflammation, or other issues in the oesophagus.

Nausea and Vomiting, Especially with Blood: This could be a sign of ulcers, bleeding, or other problems in the digestive system.

Unexplained Weight Loss: Endoscopy can help identify potential causes in the digestive tract.

Chronic Diarrhoea and Blood in Stool: These symptoms could point to inflammation, ulcers, or other issues that endoscopy can help diagnose.
